  • Intersection of Mosquito River and Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Munsing, MI. May 2017
    _MG_0509.jpg
  • I arrived in the upper peninsula of Michigan. It was foggy and misty with a feels like temperature of 26° F. My hope was to be able to get out to the pictured area of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. That hope was dashed by the 20 MPH sustained winds peaking up to 30 MPH. Certainly not kayaking or wading weather. I went down to Miner’s Beach where there were heavy clouds and heavy surf. The forecast said there would be a chance of clearing right at unset. So I stood there photographing what I could while standing on a normally sandy beach that was underwater two feet every time the waves came in along with fighting the wind. I am glad I waited.

  • As the water freezes in subzero temperatures along the Lake Michigan coast it attempts to form pancake ice. The constant waves prevent it from freezing completely but provide enough resistance to clash with the outgoing waves. This cyclical movement creates the spray seen here.
